Wooden and metal gates: what are the differences?

Home » News » Wooden and metal gates: what are the differences?

Installing automated electric gates brings a huge number of advantages. Firstly, the added level of security they provide over a manual gate ensures you can have peace of mind in your home. But they have also been shown to increase property value, and they are unbeaten for convenience.

The confidence and comfort automated electric gates offer can make a huge difference when it comes to how you experience your home, and provide your property with a new lease of life. There are plenty of decisions to bear in mind when choosing new gates, but perhaps the most significant one is whether you opt for a wooden gate or a metal one. Here we’ll talk through some of the advantages of each and some differences between them, to help you on your way to making the choice that’s right for you.

Wooden gates

Wooden gates have a classic appeal, giving your home a charmingly traditional appearance. Typically made from hardwoods for their durability and resilience, there are a large number of different woods to choose from, so it should be easy to find one which suits your property.

One of the advantages of wooden gates over metal ones is that the nature of the material means that it is easy to adapt to different openings – whether your gateway is an unusual shape or has tricky proportions, we would be able to create a gate to fit.

Wooden gates are a good choice if you value greater privacy – if you would rather people can’t see straight to your house from the road, a wooden gate might be right for you. They do require some maintenance to ensure they stay in tip-top condition, particularly ensuring that they are kept clean of algae. However, if the right wood is chosen, this can be kept to a minimum. Our wooden gates are also environmentally friendly, as all our woods are chosen from sustainable, local suppliers.

Metal gates

If you’re looking for a slightly grander style of entrance, metal might be the right choice for you. TPS manufacture and install a wide range of metal gates, and often work with architects to create bespoke designs.

The creative freedom metal provides is popular with those looking to match the character of newer buildings, or to give an existing building a new look. Depending on the period of your building, metal might be a better choice thank wood. Stone-built houses, for example, often suit the more formal style of a metal gate. Meanwhile, the recent trend for Arts and Crafts style houses has increased the popularity of wrought iron gates.

Metal gates require a different type of maintenance to wooden ones, to ensure that they remain rust-free and keep that fresh look for longer after installation. However, this won’t be a huge undertaking, and TPS service, repair and install gates thoroughly to help you with this, offering regular maintenance. You can choose sliding gates and swing gates in both wood and metal, but the metal sliding gate is a particularly popular choice. If you’re after a fairly traditional-style metal gate, we have a range of styles that you can choose from.

Wooden or metal gates: which is right for you?

Both styles of gate do an excellent job, which means the differences between wooden and metal gates largely comes down to your own personal taste. Consider: what type of property do you own, and what kind of ‘look’ are you hoping to achieve? TPS manufacture and install both types of electric gates, sliding gates, and swing gates, and as we are now an ADT approved installer, you are guaranteed to have a product that meets your requirements and provides a high level of security. Our team are more than happy to talk you through the different options, so give us a call to find out more.
