Issues with warehouse security and how to resolve them

Home » News » Issues with warehouse security and how to resolve them

If you own or rent a warehouse, then you know how important it is to secure it properly. Warehouses can have anything from a few thousand pounds worth of goods to over a million pounds in stock, so it is essential you keep your storage facility secure. If you are doing any of the things below, then your warehouse is not properly secured, so follow our advice and take action today to fix it.

Make sure the perimeter is secure

Any warehouse complex needs secure perimeter fencing. If your warehouse doesn’t have fencing, then anyone can access it, making it easy for thieves to break in and steal your goods. You should have your security guard do a walk around the perimeter as often as possible to make sure there are no gaps or no one has tried to break in. However, fencing alone is not infallible, as a determined criminal can still scale it even with barbed wire, so you must take some other steps to make sure your warehouse is even more secure.

Authorised access only

If you don’t know who has access to your warehouse at all times, now is the time to change that. A great way to do this is to install a turnstile at the main gates or front door of the building. You should have a security guard on the main desk with a sign in sheet so you can keep track of any visitors, and all employees should be issued with clock in cards. Not only will this make organising payroll easier as you can see who has worked what hours, it will also allow you to keep track of your employees locations at all times.

Stop unwanted vehicles

You can install barriers at the entrance to your warehouse to prevent unknown vehicles from accessing the property. A guard station beside the barriers should have an employee in it 24/7 to prevent unwanted visitors. Bollards are also an effective method of stopping vehicles from accessing the complex, but you need to combine these with other security methods as they obviously won’t stop a thief on foot.

Strong and sturdy doors

One of the most effective ways you can increase your factory security is to make sure that you have good quality doors. If you have old, badly maintained doors then you are at risk of serious theft. Installing new doors as soon as possible will make sure your warehouse is safe and secure for years to come. Internal doors should be sturdy and secure as well to prevent anyone who shouldn’t be in certain areas from accessing them. For general storefronts, you can use roller shutters, but if you are storing high-value goods in your warehouse, then you may want to think about installing industrial doors instead.
